The article defines the range of problems faced by students with disabilities when entering organizations of higher and postgraduate education. The authors convincingly prove that the provision of affordable and high-quality higher education to persons with disabilities is due to the high level of socio-economic and social development that has developed in the country and is one of the possible ways to ensure this category of persons their right to professional self-determination and self-realization, social adaptation and integration into society.
In order to study the possibility of obtaining higher education by people with disabilities and to identify the real problems of students with disabilities when entering a university, the authors applied a qualitative analysis of a survey that was conducted with students with various disorders of psychophysical development studying at pedagogical universities. As a result, the most characteristic features and problems of accessibility of higher education for students with disabilities at the university level were identified. It was found that students with impaired psychophysical development face not only physical difficulties in accessing universities, but also face serious barriers associated with a low degree of awareness of the areas of training implemented at the university, specialties and specializations, opportunities for subsequent employment and career growth, etc. Another difficulty is the insufficient information of future applicants about the degree of physical accessibility of all buildings and dormitories of the university for unhindered movement, about social benefits and types of support for students with disabilities and disabilities during their studies at the university. Based on the identified difficulties in enrolling people with disabilities in universities, the authors propose specific recommendations aimed at attracting significantly more applicants with disabilities and disabilities to universities, which will contribute to the effective implementation of article 24 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on ensuring equal rights and access to high-quality higher education.
