In the article, the authors argue the relevance of training for self-education in the context of modern conditions, as well as an attempt to reveal the essence of pedagogical self-education as an activity. Based on the conducted theoretical research, the article defines the definition of "pedagogical self-education", and concludes that for successful self-education, a teacher must master the basics of information and research activities. The results of diagnostics of the level of readiness of pedagogical University students for information and research aspects of self-educational activity are presented. On the basis of these results, one of the adequate and promising ways of optimization of process of preparation of future teachers for independent study, indicated inclusion in the compulsory component of the curriculum of such disciplines, the learning of which would allow the students more thoroughly learn the basics of research activities.
